I have reconsidered the tone and conclusions of my original article and, although still affirm the main thesis, I believe there must be an alteration of tone. My reconsideration is based upon the following personal experience: I am a white person, and all the people I know who have been infected, and/or who have died from Covid-19, are Black. My family has been especially impacted and saddened by the death over the holidays of my wife’s beloved uncle from Covid-19. There is, quite frankly, something deeply eerie and unjust about the pandemic from a perspective of race.

Race, Class, Nutrition and Covid-19

The disproportionate impact of Covid-19 makes it clear and imperative that both during the pandemic, and beyond, we dedicate ourselves to a movement to empower nutritional improvements in rural and urban low-income communities. This will require the sharing of scientific information, but information sharing of itself will not be sufficient. I believe we need to build grass-roots support in low-income white, Black and Latinx communities to build trust, then share information, then provide support for those seeking nutritional improvement.

I found Dr. Gregor’s discussion of the Paleo Diet to be extremely compelling, especially as the idea of return to our natural roots for consumption has a great deal of appeal to me. But to learn that homo sapiens were 95% plant-based for 90% of our evolution, that omnivorous animals don’t have heart disease, and that the average paleolithic life span was 22 years, gives great fodder to counter points of meat eaters.
